Library Closure

Due to the current health crisis, the Library is closed until further notice. The closure also includes the 24-hour computer suite and Heritage Quay.

Requesting of items has been suspended and previously requested items do not need to be returned. There will be no penalties for the late return of library items.

For further updates please see the University website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still get help with Library and IT queries?

The Library and IT help desk is closed, but we are running an online enquiry service. For all queries, please visit HudHelp. You will be able to find answers to commonly asked questions here and request support via the relevant contact form.

Can I still access Summon and other online materials?

Yes, all online library resources (including Summon, ebooks, journal articles and more) will be available as normal. You will need to log in with your University email and password. If you have trouble accessing any online resources, please email with details of what you were trying to access and we will investigate.

Books

Should I return my books?

If you have library books on loan, you do not need to return them. Requesting of books has been suspended, so your books will continue to automatically renew as normal. You will not be able to return books while the library is closed as there will be no access to the building.

I have some books that have already been requested back or are overdue, what should I do?

Requesting of books has been suspended. There will be no penalties for the late return of library items. Please keep hold of any items you have and return them when the library re-opens.

Inter-Library Loans

Can I still request an item through the Inter-Library Loans Service?

  • Books: We are no longer able to process any requests for book titles that are only available in physical print. If a title is available electronically we may be able to supply a link.
  • Journal Articles and Book Chapters: During any closed period we may be able to fulfil requests for journal articles and individual book chapters that can be supplied as electronic copies.

Please note that staff resources are very limited so whilst we will endeavour to maintain a reduced service we cannot guarantee our usual service levels.

What do I do if a book I have borrowed via Inter-Library Loans is due back when the University is closed?

Please look after it whilst the University Library is closed and return it as soon as we open again. You will not be fined for the late return.

I have requested a book via the Inter-Library Loans service and it has been supplied for Reference Use in the Library Only. How do I consult it?

Unfortunately, whilst the University Library is closed you will not be able to consult your Reference Use only item. As soon as we reopen contact us to discuss the matter and we will liaise with the Supply Library to try and extend the loan period for you.

Laptops

I currently have a laptop on loan. What should I do?

Please keep hold of the laptop and return it when the Library re-opens again. You will not be charged for late return of a laptop while we are closed. Please notify us if you still have a laptop by using the IT contact form in HudHelp. [Is this bit still needed?]

Can I still borrow a laptop?

No. The Library building is now closed and there is no access to the LapSafe.

Library Rooms

What about room bookings?

The service has been suspended until the Library re-opens.
