CrossMark

The CrossMark designation system helps scholars readily identify the version of an article they are reading as well as learn other important metadata about the article such as funding source, ORCIDs, peer-review, and publication status. CrossMark went live in spring 2012 but has not been widely adopted by publishers at this point. What makes CrossMark unique is the fact that the metadata recorded within the designation is machine readable and mine-able directly from other computing systems and this ability is becoming increasingly important when trying to find the article of record during data mining and when there are numerous post-prints or pre-prints of articles being deposited in institutional repositories and to other social media sites. At this time the utilization of CrossMark has not been marketed to libraries or institutional repository managers.
