APA Referencing Guide — Newspaper articles

Newspaper articles referencing guide (PDF download).

Note

  • If the article is from a live newspaper website, such as FT.com or guardian.com, include the URL in the reference list.
  • If the URL is long, then you can use a URL shortener, such as bit.ly or Bitly or TinyURL.
  • If the article is taken from a subscription database, such as ProQuest International Newsstream or Gale Primary Sources, do not include a URL. You can include the page number if available.
  • These articles can be found in Summon because the Library subscribes to these databases.
  • If the article is from a hard copy (paper) newspaper then include page number/s.
  • If there is no author on the article, refer to the missing information section of our guide.
Format and order
  • Author(s) (family name, comma followed by initials, with full stop and space after each initial)
  • (Date of publication). (year followed by comma, followed by month and day in round brackets, followed by full stop)
  • Title of article. (followed by full stop)
  • Title of newspaper. (in italics followed by full stop)
  • Page number(s). (followed by full stop.)
  • URL (use for live newspaper sites only, not subscription databases).
