1.1 Internal Library Message on Open Access

The promotion and advocacy for open access publishing by librarians has to begin as a discussion and tenet that is adopted first and foremost within any given academic library by the staff. The message needs to be concise and adopted by all members of the organization in order for it to be successful. A more concise message and process by which the promotion and adoption of open access content provision is made makes the adoption more pervasive throughout the entire library enterprise.

There are multiple new roles in libraries to help both promote as well as manage open access provision from the digital library manager to the scholarly communications librarian.

The work is most easily accomplished when the entire library staff recognise that this is part of their job alongside these positions. One of the ways to achieve this buy-in is through internal instructional sessions on how the systems and workflows for open access publication are to be managed and explanations on how this work fits into current work streams in place for for-fee materials.  Any mandate or guideline should be readily recognized as the goal of the entire organization and the work to be done to accomplish the open access publication goals part of everyone’s work within the organization. Holding short talks on open access and open access models at monthly staff meetings goes a long way to advancing the understanding of open access and the support an institution can make to open access provision of content.
