The Project Steering Group has defined four categories for references on reading lists:
- Essential – reading that is required of all students to broaden and deepen understanding of the subject
- Recommended – reading that is desirable, as it expands understanding of the subject
- Background – in some disciplines, and at some levels of study, students may be expected to explore the subject in greater depth
- For Purchase – where it is necessary for all students to have access to the entire text for a number of weeks
The Steering Group has recommended that the essential category is used as the basis for generating modified reading lists. When selecting references for your reading lists, you are encouraged to consider the modified reading lists guidelines (Word DOC) and identify which items are required reading for the module:
“A modified reading list involves reducing the volume of reading/information whilst ensuring that the student has access to enough resources to fully participate in the course and achieve the learning outcomes.”
