Basic IT skills practice

Kirklees Libraries have created a good website for computer beginners at https://sites.google.com/site/bitskirkleeslibraries/ called BITS which stands for Basic Information Technology Sessions.

One of the best skills that anybody can learn to help with their studies is how to touch tye. Imagine how much faster you would be able to finish your assignments if you could use more than one finger at a time!
With this in mind we have put together a list of online typing tutorials so that you can pick your favourite.
BBC Dance Mat Typing
Sense-Lang Typing Tutor
Rapid Typing Tutor

… but please try not to set our keyboards on fire due to the extreme speed of your typing!

FREE Microsoft Training!!!

Barnsley Council has won a bid for Free Microsoft Training. Yes – free!!!

This is official Microsoft online training and covers Office 2007 suite at varying levels from very basic to advanced. It is open to anyone and everyone including non-Barnsley students. All training can be done in the comfort of your own home (if you have a computer).

There is a time limit for signup between now and November, but once you have signed up you then have 12 months to go through as much of the online material as you like.

There is an optional test at the end of most of the training enabling you to get a Microsoft certified qualification, so it could be a real CV boost. If you just want to update your knowledge without taking the test that’s fine.  You can even do a full Microsoft Professional qualification if you want!

For more information on how to get started, please contact me (Julie) on 01226 644380.

I am a returning student, why do I have two mailboxes.

All returning students in Sept 2010 will retain their existing mailbox and also get a new Unimail mailbox.  The existing mailbox will be available until December 2010 to allow existing emails to be migrated to Unimail.  This service will then be withdrawn in December 2010 when all students will only get access to their Unimail mailbox.

I am a returning student and unable to login to Unimail.

When a returning students first logs in to Unimail they will have to use their date of birth as the password.  It is advisable to reset your password using the password reset facility at https://password.hud.ac.uk.  This will set the password to the same as that on other University systems.  Alternatively you can contact Student IT Support on 01484 473730

Will I be able to keep my email address when I have finished studying at the University of Huddersfield?

Yes!  Your University email is now for life unless regulations change in the future.

Can I import  my other email accounts into the Unimail service?
As long as your email service allows POP connectivity you can import up to 5 additional mailboxes under the options menu.  Instructions can be found here

Can email be forwarded to another account?
You can create forwarding rules from within your own Unimail mailbox under the ‘rules’ section.  Instructions can be found here

What is my maximum mail attachment size?
The maximum size allowed for an email is 20MB.

Can I use Outlook as my email client?
Yes you can instructions can be found here.

I am an Apple Mac or Linux user and I do not appear to have all the features available when I login to Unimail. What is the problem?
Microsoft currently supports the following browsers for the Unimail service:

•    Internet Explorer 7/8 (Windows)
•    Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 and above (on Windows)
•    Safari 3.1

Unimail will work in the majority of browsers but some features may be unavailable if one of those browsers isn’t listed above.

I am a member of staff, am I entitled to use this service?
Unfortunately this service will only be available to all students. The service may be able to accommodate staff email in the future as the product evolves but at present some ‘Enterprise’ features that we wish to deploy to staff are not available in this service.

Where is my email stored?
Your email is stored with Microsoft in a new data centre based in Dublin. This was created especially to host Windows Live services.

Who owns the data?
University of Huddersfield will remain the custodian of any Unimail Data. Microsoft only stores the data on our behalf classifying it as organisational data. University of Huddersfield and Microsoft do not scan the contents of any of your email messages (except for viruses and spam) or utilise your data in any way.

What happens if there is a major failure to the Unimail service?
As this is based on the Windows Live Service it is in Microsoft’s best interest to ensure that this service is highly available.  We anticipate that any failures will be dealt with the utmost urgency.

Is my new mailbox protected by the Data Protection Act?
Yes, your mailbox is protected by all EU Data Protection regulations.

Where can I get the terms of use.

Your use of the Unimail system is bound by the University Computing Regulations and the Microsoft Code of Conduct which can be viewed by clicking the links.

Why has the University changed the email system?
The University is actively investigating cloud based services and email is an ideal place to start. We did a comparison between Microsoft live@edu and Google mail and found that Microsoft offered the greatest flexibility for deployment with our existing systems.

How to transfer mail.hud.ac.uk emails to Unimail – Returning students only!

Hi and welcome back!!

Hopefully you have already heard about our brand new Unimail system.  All current students at the university; both returning students and new, have had a Unimail account created.  This means that returning students do in  effect have TWO university email accounts!

To avoid confusion we recommend that all returning students use their new Unimail account and forward emails from their old mail.hud.ac.uk account to Unimail as soon as possible.  Instructions on how to do this can be found here.  Please note that your mail.hud.ac.uk account will only be active until December 2010, so we also recommend that you inform people of your change of email address.

More information about Unimail can be found here.

Other points to note about Unimail:

  • Unimail can be accessed via the Student Portal and also at http://unimail.hud.ac.uk/
  • To log into Unimail the username is the full email address e.g. u1072746@unimail.hud.acuk
  • Your password to access Unimail is your date of birth in the format 20jun84 until you change your password (regardless of what your password is for Portal etc)
  • Passwords can be changed using http://password.hud.ac.uk which will set ALL university systems logins to the same (inc Unimail)

If you need any help or have any questions, please come to the Library to see either Alistair or me.

Hope you enjoy the new email service,

Julie
