The lecture explores the policy and socio-economic context within which post compulsory education and training is placed. It examines the way the economy and skills are constructed and the impact of these upon the sector. It sets these issues alongside questions of social justice considering the claim that education, by addressing assumed economic needs, will satisfy the demands of social justice. The lecture concludes by arguing that if education is to seriously address questions of social justice a politicised understanding is required, one that challenges accepted understandings of the relationship between education, economy and social justice.
